This is just one of the things I knew that will come to TV’s, Skype. Yes, the video conferencing software which you use to talk to your grandma or sugar daddy will be built-in to LG and Panasonic Televisions.

The TV is now internet connected, there are HDTV which connects to the internet to enable you to watch youtube, netflix or vudu from the comfort of your living room (such as the Samsung UN55B7100 and the LG 55LH50). However you can also buy Home Theater System and Network Media Extender that will give same result, making youtube and internet enabled TV redundant (you can buy a cheap TV without internet connectivity and just buy a home theater with youtube like the LG LHB977 or just get a WD TV Live if you’re not ready to have a home theater system). These next generation TVs with Skype built-in is a different story, It justifies the need of internet connected TV. And since Skype is free, you can make unlimited skype to skype video call and treat your HDTV as a window to other part of the world. Sure you can already do this with your old computer, laptop or netbook, but having to talk face-to-face with your love ones in almost true-to-life high definition video quality on a HDTV is a different scenario.

On Skype.com it says that you will need and internet connected TV with skype built-in, a webcam specially made for your TV, and a boradband internet connections (1Mb/s). It sounds like you need to buy a separate webcam for your TV even though the TV is already skype enabled, which doesn’t make sense. You buy Skype enabled TV to use skype on it and its better to put a camera built-in to TV than buying a separate webcam to minimize clutter. Aside from using the built-in camera of your TV for Skype, it would be nice you can use it as a SPY CAM to watch or record what’s happening on your living room (Qik enabled TV). Another great application is to be able to have video conversation while watching the same movie or channel.

The Skype enabled TVs will be available spring of 2010 and expect it to be pricey at first.
