According to the producers, the film takes place six years after the events of the series. It is also known that, unlike the first film, the plot will not focus on the series’ ongoing “mythology” and will instead be a standalone thriller/horror story, similar to many of the “monster-of-the-week” episodes that were frequently seen in the TV series.
In an interview published March 27, 2008, Carter stated that the film would be consistent with the entire X-Files story arc, as Scully’s child William would “not go unconsidered” in the film, and that it “takes place in the present and uses a story envisioned when the series ended”.
So this film is going to be the continuation of the series, taking place in the present and will continue the story after the series ended.
