With the release of the new Xseries Music Phones the X3 and X6. Nokia also unveiled a new smaller and affordable version of their first touch screen phone Nokia N97, the N97 mini.

Mini because it’s a trimmed down version of the Original N97 but not feature-wise. So how does it compare to it’s older brother?

Size and Weight

At 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm, 75 cc the mini is litterally smaller to the N97 which is 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm, 88 cc, the mini is also lighter at 138 g while the earlier model is 150 g. The weight difference I think should be barely noticeable.

Display

The N97 have a 3.6 inch display while the Nokia shrunk the screen size to 3.2 inch, this would be a drawback since you get a smaller interface to look at. But both screens have 640×360 resolution so it might not really matter.

Keyboard

N97 mini removed the dedicated directional pad to give way of arrow keys tucked into the slide-out, tilting QWERTY keyboard.

Storage

The Original N97 have a built in 32gb while the later only have 8gb of internal memory which you can extend with it’s micro SD slot.

Software

The Mini have more home screen widgets, updated OVI maps and support for more flick controls.

Batter Life

The Mini uses Li-Ion 1200 mAh (BL-4D) which you can squeeze for up to 320 h (2G) / 310 h (3G) standby time, up to 7 h 10 min (2G) / 6 h (3G) talk time and up to 32 hours of music playback. While the N97 uses Li-Ion 1500 mAh (BP-4L) it can last longer with up to 432 h (2G) / 408 h (3G) stand by time, Up to 9 h 30 min (2G) / 6 h (3G) and 40 hours of music.

Price

The Mini will be priced at 450 Euros ($640) while the previous model costs 550 Euros ($781).

IMO the difference that will make huge impact is the battery life, N97 users switching to the newer Miniature version who got used to using their phones longer will have to sacrifice usage time for the more like-able, pocket-able, fashionable N97 mini, and oh!, did I mentioned the price (since the recession is far from over)?
