If you guys own a T-Mobile G1the first phone based on Google’s Android platform, then you may notice that the G1′s touch screen doesn’t use multi-touch technology which allows for a screen to accept multiple points of contact as simultaneous input.

Venture Beat reports that an alleged Android team member said that Apple specifically asked Google not to use Multi-Touch in their Android platform and Google agreed.

Apple, which of course makes the signature multi-touch mobile device, the iPhone, apparently asked Google not to implement it, and Google agreed, an Android team member tells us.

The implementation of multi-touch on the iPhone gives it an advantage over competing phones such as the G1 and the BlackBerry Storm, and it raises the question of why Google decided to comply with Apple’s request. the same source said that Google didn’t want to risk their relationship with Apple and another reason is that they are avoiding the potential for costly and lengthy patent litigation with Apple.

Currently, the Palm Pre is the only phone to offer multi-touch gestures similar to Apple’s iPhone, and because of recent public statements, Apple and Palm’s relationshp have soured.

Is Google afraid of Apple? or are they just waiting for the right timing to go against Apple and make their own phone with multitouch technology? Well, for now, Google is staying on the sidelines.
