Nokia today launches a new smartphone to challenge the iPhone market and be the next iPhone Killer. Nokia N900 does not run on Symbian OS but on a Linux Mobile OS called Maemo, with the same functionality as iPhone OS, and Google Android the Maemo on Nokia N900 looks very promising.

Maemo 5 is the latest Maemo OS version. This update brings touch functionality to the interface, more information on Maemo 5 can be found on Maemo.org.

The iPhone 3Gs and N900 shares the same internal hardware like 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, On-board GPS and Wi-Fi and Faster Graphics. But the N900 seems to be faster with more Application Memory up to 1GB, it also shoots better photos with it’s 5 Megapixel camera.

It seems that the N900 is aimed to replace the N97 with it’s release this October in Europe. At about $712 or 500 euros this Nokia’s new smartphone is almost the same price as an iPhone. The Linux OS running on this Nokia Phone is something to watch for, some analyst found the Maemo OS better then Symbian S60.

Here’s a Video of Maemo running on the Nokia N900

Also there’s photos of the N900 looks slick i like the black edge over the chome bezel of the iPhone.

It looks really good but I hate how thick this thing is. At 18mm this device is less pocketable compared to the iPhone which is only 12.3mm. It seems that the thickness is due to the fact that it have a sliding keyboard. From what I see Nokia packed up more to this smartphone compared to the iPhone and if they made it a little thinner and remove the sliding keyboard to make it more pocket-able then it might just be the iPhone killer. Can’t wait to get my hands on this. You can see N900′s specs on Nokia Europe site
