Data Robotics recently released a new professional class backup and storage device, the Drobo S.Whether you’re a professional video editor or someone who wants to secure tons of Blu-ray movies which have been downloaded from the internet (the legal way), a DVD collector who digitized all the movie he has ever collected or some one like me who have collected terabytes of photos, music and family videos, It’s important that we back it all up or all the important stuff we have collected will be lost forever and the time spent to download them from the internet will all be wasted.
Now that we have justified the need for a stable backup and storage solution like the Drobo, let’s see what’s are the attribute of the Drobo S that would give the Data-loss paranoid to feel secure and why the Drobo S is better versus other RAID systems.
The Drobo S can accommodate up to Five Hard Drives and expand your storage capacity up to 10TB or even more. The drives are hot swappable, just add or replace a small drive with abigger drive for instant expansion.Versus the traditional RAID systems the Drobo S enables you to add any drive capacities, brand and speed. Before with other RAID system, all the drives must have the same size and specs for it to functions, now that’s a thing of the past. Data Robotics named it as Beyond RAID technology. Now you can add much bigger hard drives that will be available in the future, while Drobo S keeping the process automatic and the data available while being maintained.
With the self-healing technology developed by Data Robotics and is built-in into the Drobo S, the Drobo will examine the blocks and sectors on every disk continuously, flagging questionable areas, Even when it’s idle mode. This preemptive “scrubbing” ensure that the data is written only to a healthy area of the drives, keeping the data safe always. And in an event whete a drive fails, Drobo S will do it’s best to keep the data in the safest state possible, utilizing the available space on the remaining healthy drives.
Dual Drive Redundancy option protects you from failure of up to two hard drives. Not that’s what I call protection!, but you can always turn it off and switch back to single redundancy with a switch of a button, and get more hard drive space. No need to reformat and store files on a temporary location which you normally do with RAID 5 and RAID 6 configuration which took several hours or even days.
Formatted to work with Mac, Windows or Linux the Drobo S supports multiple file formats such as NTFS, HFS Plus, EXT3, and FAT32. You can check Drobo S specifications here.

Drobo S is available starting at a price of $799 MSRP (530 Euros, 485 UK Pounds or 880 Australian Dollars, with multiple configurations up to $1,799 for a 10TB (5x 2TB).
