October 6, 2009 – Western Digital, one of the leading Hard Disk manufacturer released a new ultra-portable external hard disk which is both slick as it is functional the My Passport Elite. Available in charcoal black, metallic red and metallic blue it surely pop up when placed on your desk.
Lat time terabytes of my photos, movies and music are saved with a My Book Studio II RAID External Hard Drive, this time we get to see a it’s smaller sibling. At a glance the fist thing you’ll notice on the New My Passport offers is the illuminated capacity gauge, which makes it easy for you to see how much is left, a lock icon which indicates the drive security status (256-bit encryption), and a USB dock which make it stand on your desk giving you more desktop space.
Aside from the capacity gauge, dock and drive lock capability, the New WD My Passport Elite also includes WD Smartware, Western Digital’s automatic backup software (its kinda like Apples Time Machine but without that cool interface). This Portable Extrnal Hard-Drive is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger and Snow Leopard but will come out-of-the-box in NTFS format, Mac users need to reformat it to either Fat 32 or Mac OS format to make it work on the iMac, MacBooks, and Mac Pros. I would suggest using Fat 32 if you need to use it both with a windows machine and a Mac.

With drive capacity ranging from 620 GB, 500 GB, 400 GB, 320 GB to 250 GB, you can go cheap or get the biggest and store upto 12,00 photos, 160,000 mp3s, 16,000 uncompressed music, 49 hours of Videos (DV), 240 hours of DVD quality video and up to 77 hours of 720p HD Videos. That’s plenty of stuff for such a small external device.
The WD My Passporte Elite is available now at 169.99 usd (640gb), 159.99 usd (500gb), and 199.99 usd (320gb). It’s available locally and I’ve seen several units on PowerMac Store at SM City Markina (Philippines).
