western digital my book studio IIFor me storage is everything, I’ve been hoarding photos since I got a Digital Camera and I keep them safely stored on a 1 Terabyte My Book Studio Edition II dual-drive external storage from Western Digital. To make my photos, ibank files, itunes photo and videos I set it to mirror mode. Enabling RAID in mirror mode  mirrors the content of the two 500 GB drives so when HD A dies everything is still stored on HD B. This will make My Book Studio II store half it’s maximum capacity but will ultimately makes all your important files safe unless both HD A and B dies at the same time.

Last month during a typhoon it’s one of the first gadget I saved from drowning (cant afford to loose 400TB of photos, music and video) in the flood. Although I keep the WD My Book Studio Edition II from getting wet, the external HD still  got moist, I assume that it will still work since it was never got dipped in the mud, unlike it’s AC power adapter. While cleaning the house I placed the My Book inside a cabinet together with our dry clothes hoping the dry clothes will absorb all the moist. After a couple of day I tested if it will work, I’m not aware that the power block of it’s AC power adapter is still filled with water so it explodes. Luckily I found a universal power adapter with 12v option at CDR-king, it’s made for laptop but it worked on my My Book Studio II.

The external hard disk started but my computer did not detect it. I did the necessary trouble shooting method until I noticed that it emits a clicking sound which means 1 of the two hard drive is broken. I removed one drive at a time then and when I removed hard disk A, it suddenly got detected and thanks God my iPhoto, and iTunes library is still intact. I get a notification that my My Book Studio II have a problem that I need to add a new hard disk. This means that right now my files are not protected. Instead of buying a new hard disk I think I should upgrade and buy 2tb or 4tb My Book Studio II ($329.99 and $649.99 respectively). Doing that will burn more bucks, but my iTunes and iPhoto library is getting bigger and after proving the benefits of a RAID external had disk in mirror mode I realized It’s better to pay more than loose years of memories and terabytes of downloaded itunes songs and movies.
