iPhone owners will surely be thrilled by the news of Google making an advanced voice search app for the iPhone according to John Markoff of New York Times. The app can answer location related questions, give driving directions, respond to generic questions, and even search local data from the address book.

This app works when you ask a question then sound is converted to a digital file and sent to Google’s servers, which try to determine the words spoken and pass them along to the Google search engine. Results will be dislayed within seconds on a fast wireless network.

Yahoo and Microsoft already offers voice services for cellphones. Microsoft’s Tellme service returns information in specific categories like directions, maps and movies while Yahoo’s oneSearch with Voice is more flexible but does not appear to be as accurate as Google’s offering.

Apple is expected to make this app available as soon as Friday through its iTunes store.

This new app can really be useful if you want to ask for directions to your nearest coffee shop or even directions to a local place where you want to go. The only problem is how accurate the answers will be. [NYT]
