Do you remember the hype when someone discovered that Apple have a killswitch for the iPhoe’s Apps? Well Google admitted that they have one for their Android Apps, I wonder how much hype this will create. Google said that their remote kill switch is intended to protect users in cases of malicious apps or privacy violations, but will undoubtedly draw fire from users who want ultimate control over what applications they keep on their phones.
In the Android Market terms of service, Google expressly says that it might remotely remove an application from a user’s phone. “Google may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement … in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion,” the terms, linked to from the phone, read.
While Apple reluctantly acknowledged the existence of their kill switch only after it was discovered by developers, Google has been relatively upfront about Android’s. They’ve even laid out plans for reimbursing users whose paid apps (which aren’t even available yet) are recalled.
For now, the apps for the G1 are still free because Google hasn’t yet set up the mechanisms to allow developers to offer them for purchase.
Its a good thing that Google admitted this fact before somebody discovers it later. We still don’t know how much this fact will affect developers and users, will they attract more developers? will more users be interested in their apps? We just have to wait until the G1 have more apps. [ComputerWorld]
