Firmwares, by definition means a microprogram stored in ROM, designed to implement a function that had previously been provided in software. As its name suggests, firmware is somewhere between hardware and software. Like software, it is a computer program which is executed by a microprocessor or a microcontroller. But it is also tightly linked to a piece of hardware, and has little meaning outside of it. So updating your firmware sounds like a good idea, but lately, these updates are buggy and sometimes downright dangerous to install, Some manufactures, namely Sony, Apple and Nintendo are increasingly releasing firmware that disables functionality for business reasons, or that just make products worse by being halfbaked. Here is a rundown of firmware updates that weren’t exactly beloved by users from Gizmodo.
So for those of you who immediately click “YES PLEASE!” to all auto-updaters, consider this post, and maybe wait 24 hours before doing the upgrade. Besides, it is always fun to read reactions from certain “victims” of these “updates” as you quietly say to yourself “Thank god I didn’t update yet”.
