Apple admits that some of its more recent MacBook Pro models may contain faulty Nvidia graphics chips that produce distorted video or fail completely.

Nvidia said that it would incur a $150 million to $200 million charge to cover repair and replacement expenses resulting from “a weak die/packaging material set” in certain versions of its previous MCP and GPU products employed by various notebook vendors. Although Nvidia refused to confirm or deny whether Apple was among the notebook manufacturers affected by the issue, citing “confidentiality obligations” to its customers that prevent it from discussing the matter. Although Apple already admitted that some models of their MacBook have faulty Nvidia Graphics card.

The specific models affected are MacBook Pros with the 8600M GT manufactured between May 2007 and last month. They include the MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz), MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz), and MacBook Pro (Early 2008). If your MacBooks have distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen or no video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on then Apple will repair or replace your faulty graphics card for free. If you have paid for repairs or replacements before Apple will also issue refunds to customers. These customers should contact Apple for details on the refund process.

So if you notice any of these symptoms on your MacBooks you can take them to Apple Retail Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation, or you can call your local Apple Contact Center. You may need to make a reservation before visiting the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store. [via AppleInsider]
