If you remember,  iTunes 8.0 had some problems with Windows Vista users getting the Blue Screen of Death everytime someone plugs their iPod into their computer. Well, Apple has quietly put a fix in their support page requiring you to Uninstall iTunes and Mobile Device Support, restart, and then re-download. Kind of confusing? I’ll just post the steps posted in Aples support page. Blow is the step by step solution from Apple:

Solution 1

  1. Disconnect your iPhone or iPod from Windows Vista.
  2. Uninstall iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support
    • For Classic View
      1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
      2. First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
      3. Select iTunes, click Uninstall.
    • For Control Panel Home View
      1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
      2. First select Apple Mobile Device Support, click Uninstall.
      3. Select iTunes and click Uninstall.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Re-download and install the updated iTunes 8 installer from www.apple.com/itunes/download.
Important: Do not use the iTunes8Setup or iTunes864Setup file you previously downloaded.

And if that still doesn’t fix your BSoD problem, Apple still have another “solution” for you.

Solution 1

Outdated software drivers on your computer can cause strange behaviors when syncing the computer with your iPhone or iPod touch. While any driver software could be a factor, updating the software drivers for Logitech QuickCam/Webcam products, Lexmark scanners, and some built-in media card reader drivers on the computer may solve this issue in a majority of cases. Refer to article HT1768 for additional assistance with updating drivers. Once you have updated the drivers, you should be able to sync the photos taken on the iPhone or saved on iPod touch.

If you are using Windows Vista, make sure you install the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later.

Solution 2

Isolate the issue to see if there is a USB conflict by disconnecting other USB devices connected to the computer such as a printer, digital camera, scanner, etc.

Solution 3

Try connecting the iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port or connect directly to the PC if using an external USB hub.

Let us just hope that these so called solutions really fix the BSoD problems with the Windows Vista user. We don’t know the reason why Apple silently posted these solutions, maybe because the problem only affects a small percentage of iTunes users?
