The Canon S90 and Panasonic’s LX3 have been the Pro Photographers point-and-shoot camera of choice for quite some time, but that’s about to change with the introduction of Samsung TL500.
The Samsung TL500 is a 10 megapixel high-end point & shoot camera, it have that P&S portability but works like an SLR. Like the Canon S90 and the Panasonic LX3 the lens is not removable, and it features full manual control that an SLR user would love.
The selling factor of this camera is it’s great 24mm f/1.8 wide-angle lens. The minimum aperture of f/1.8 allows the TL500 to gather more light, making perform great in low light situation as it collect more accurate colours. The shallow dept of field allows the subject to be focused while blurring the background smoothly, the effect which you can only get with a real SLR camera.
The design is great it may not be as slick as the S90 but it looks sturdy and have that micro four-third feel to it. The AMOLED swivel LCD screen is a sweet deal, it gives photographer shooting flexibility, while the AMOLED LCD means better screen as it consumes less power for better battery performance. The TL500 is designed with ergonomics in mind, buttons and controls are well placed for easy one-hand operation.
With all that positive remarks the TL500′s video capability is it’s Achilles heals. It only shoot freakin’ 640×480 Standard Definition video, that’s a shame when several low end cheaper cameras like the NV24HD is able to shoot 720p even full 1080p videos. Is Samsung just giving the TL500 a space to grow? Okay the S90 too doesn’t shoot in HD, but the Canon S90 is so 2009, it’s 2010 baby… Oh did I told you that the lens can only zoom by 3x?
The Samsung TL500 will be available by April for $450 US.
