Sony entered the Tough Compact Digital Camera arena with the upcoming DSC-TX5. The TX5 is a 10.2 megapixel camera that is dust-proof, waterproof upto 10 feet, freeze proof up-to -14 degrees Fahrenheit and can withstand up to 5 feet of free fall.

Aside from being tough the Sony TX5 features Intelligent Sweep Panorama, Exmor R Sensor – enhances low light performance, Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range) – automatically captures two images with different exposure levels and combine it to create a genuine HDR photo, no need for tripods and third party software. Other features includes the ability to take 720p HD videos, 3″ Clear Photo LCD Plus,  and a wide touch screen display that functions-even underwater.

At first glance the Sony TX5 doesn’t appear to be a Tough Camera, the design is chic and classy without that extra rubber features and boxy design. It looks like a T Series Sony Camera. Although it’s not as tough as the Panasonic TS2, not at tough looking as Casio bet (Exilim EX-G1) the TX5 is versatile you can use it while dining without looking like you’re from an expedition or something. Question is will the glossy metallic finish still look good after several dips, drops and bumps?

The TX5 will be available this April for $350 US, 250 Euros or 230 UK Pounds.
