To all those guys who expect that next PEN (E-P2) to have a built-in viewfinder listen up, I found a photo of the supposedly next micro-fourthirds from Olympus and it’ll break your already broken heart. Sorry guys, the next Olympus PEN will don’t have a built-in view finder. But the externeal EVF slot is a hint that there’s an external viewfinder accessory for it.

Above is a leaked shot of the Olympus E-P2 from a Japanese website, it looks identical to the current olympus E-P1 but the next version above shows an External Electronic Viewfinder accessory, and an EVF slot just below the hotshoe slot.

IMO the above photo is a better implementation than having a built-in view finder as we what this fake photo have (link). The built-in view finder will make the E-P2 taller and it will be so small if they to keep the E-P2 pocket-able. For the novice users the absence of a viewfinder is okay, but for the enthusiast using an EVF is better.

Here’s a list of reasons Olympus should consider an External EVF.

  1. Using the LCD screen will drain more power. EVF will make you shoot more.
  2. It’s hard to use LCD under direct sunlight, You may have the brightest LCD to counter this but nothing can be brighter than the direct sunlight on a clear sky.
  3. Using EVF will make focusing faster.
  4. The current Optical External Viewfinder looks ugly on the E-P1. External EVF is more appropriate.

Although Olympus is currently offering an Optical External Viewfinder, Olympus would likely follow Ricoh’s implementation of EVF (see pic). The GX200 have  a tilting viewfinder, perfect for extreme worms-eye view point. I really want to see something like that on the next Ep-2.

According to rumors the Ep-2 will be released before the year end. Meaning the budget challenged guys like me still have time to earn for the next PEN.

So what are your E-p2 wish list? Post em here, and let’s hope people from Olympus to listen.
