Masaya Maeda, head of the Image Communication Products division at Canon yesterday said that they are working on a mirror less smaller version of its Digital SLR line. According to Maeda:

“It’s not a question of whether or not you have a mirror. There is a consumer need for good-quality cameras to be made smaller,”

Maeda understands the need for a smaller camera that can produce results similar to photos taken from DSLR. He also denies that it’s impossible to remove the internal mirror and claims that the Canon already done this with very small SRLs.

On the same note, Nikon is also planning to create a mirror less pro camera and could launch it before March next year. Makoto Kimura, Nikon’s president revealed that Nikon is developing a concept camera and it will emphasize on video recording and could possibly use a mirror-less system.

Looks like Canon and Nikon finally realized than consumers need a camera that will allow them to shoot better photos that is impossible to achieve using a point-and-shoot camera. This move by the two Digital SLR giants will also benefit the Pros specially if they allow to use Canon and Nikon’s wide range of lenses on a smaller camera with or without an adapter. It will surely crunch a big bite on Olympus PEN and Panasonic GF1‘s market shate.
