FE-4000 and FE-4010 OlympusThe  FE X-560wp and Stylus 550wp are water proof digital camera from Olympus that almost have the same specs but at-least they look different and made under different Series. But Olympus did not stopped there, the FE-4000 and FE-4010 are two identical camera made under the same Series, priced the same, look the same and almost have the same specs. I’m not really sure why Olympus make one product and label them as two different models, any idea?. To answer that question let’s look at the specs and features of the FE-4010 and compare it with FE-4000, I dont know where to start since they are both identical.

If you look closely at the Features of the Olympus FE-4010 and FE-4000 both are 12 Megapixel cameras, offers 4x wide angle optical xoom, a 2.7 LCD with Backlight Boost Button, AF Tracking, Face Detection, intelligent auto plus shadow adjustment technology, Magic Filter such as Pop Art, Pinhole or Wedding, Digital Image Stabilization, Youtube upload via it’s proprietary software, 20 shooting modes, ISO upto 1600, Perfect Fix feature and in-camera help guides. But if you look through the specs sheet of the two cameras you’ll see the difference which are listed below.

Difference between Olympus FE-4000 and FE-4010

  1. The FE-4010 have faster shutter speed at 1/2000 sec. –1/4 sec while the FE-4000 have 1/2000 sec. –1/2 sec.
  2. The ISO of FE-4010 could be set as Auto, High Auto, 64, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 while the FE-4000 can be set only to Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600
  3. FE-4010 have 21 shooting modes while the other have only 20, the extra shooting mode of the FE-4010 is “beach and snow” mode. The 4010 also note’s that it have a” Images Stabilization Plus” while the FE-4000 have “Image Stabilization” without the word “plus”. Also 41010 includes Pop Art, Pinhole, Fisheye artfilters and the 4000 have Pop Art and Pinhole but have Wedding instead of Fisheye.
  4. The FE-4010 includes “Perfect Shot Preview” shooting assist function while the 4000 doesn’t have it.
  5. The FE-4010 Red-Eye Fix, Shadow Adjustment Edit, Beauty Fix, Resize, Cropping while the FE-4000 includes only four playback edit effects, Red-Eye Fix, Lighting Fix, Resize, and Cropping.
  6. Additional image playback mode such as Voice Playback, Movie: Normal, Fast-Forward, Reverse, Frame-by-Frame, Voice Playback are available on the 4010
  7. The FE-4000 have a flash range of Wide: 0.66ft (0.2m) – 15.4ft (4.7m) at ISO 800 while the other have Wide: 0.49ft (0.15m) – 17.1ft (5.2m) at ISO 800, it seems that the 4000 have better flash.
  8. It is also said that the FE-4010 is weatherproof  while the other doesn’t  indicate any.
  9. It also have bigger internal memory of 48MB compared to FE-4000 which is 19MB only.
  10. the FE-4000 is also bigger and heaver at 106g and dimensions 95.0 mm x 57.0 mm x 22.4 mm while the 4010 is only 101g and 93.3 mm x 55.6 mm x 22.1.

There you go, it seems like the FE-4010 is a bit advance, 4 grams lighter and a hair less in size but have a weaker flash. It also have better ISO settings and Stabilization. So given the difference above I guess If you’re wying for the Olympus 4000 it’s better to get the 4010.
