Why Text Messages are Limited to 160 Characters Only?

Philippines, being the Text capital of the world, this is just one of the ordinary text messeges that we, FILPINOS, receive and send to our fellow texters everyday. But have you guys ever wondered why is it that the capacity of a text message in a SMS is only limited to 160 characters? Well it is because of a German dude named Friedhelm Hillebrand who decided that 160 characters is enough to express or say whatever you want and need.

: He is the one responsible for our Shorted text messages.

Alone in his room, Friedhelm, sat in front of a typewriter and began typing two to three commonly asked or said sentences. Counting all the characters, including punctuation marks, spaces, and of course, numbers and letters, he noticed that the characters used in every test sentence counted at around a 160. Having that experiment he decided that text messages should just be limited to 160 characters per message.

And now, we are the ones who are being punished because of his stupidity(I’m kidding). Thank you very much Mr. Friedhelm Hillebrand!! But nowadays i think that text messages should be longer in honor of those avid and addict texters that Philippines has. I can deffend it now so that network companies can make my idea possible.

A simple tagalog(a Filipino langguage) text message :

Nasaan ka na ba anak? Ako bilang iyong ama ay nababagabag na dahil alas dose na ng gabi ay wala ka pa. Ang paalam mo ay hangagng alas sais ka lamang. Nakalimutan mo na bang byernes ngayon at tayo ay muling magsasalo-salo nang hapunan bilang isang pamilya?

English translation:

My son, where are you? Me, being your father, is bothered that you are still not home when it is already midnight, eventhough you said that you’ll be home by 6pm. Have you forgotten that today is friday, and we’ll eat dinner together?

If you count the characters in the Tagalog version, it won’t fit to the 160 allowable characters that a single text message can send. So please, make it a little longer!!
